Sony’s first PlayStation console was actually collaboration between Sony and Nintendo dating back to early 1986. But after several false starts and other circumstances, the collaboration was dissolved in 1992.

The PlayStation would finally see release in 1995, and would pave the way for the future of Sony and its gaming console systems. The PS3 was released almost a year after the Xbox 360, and for some time was behind in regard to their video game releases in comparison to the Xbox.

Sony’s latest console along with its portable gaming unit the PSP, has outlasted other gaming companies that had been a part of the console wars including Atari, Turbo-Graphix 16, and the biggest surprise was Sega, a company that had been a dominant force in the console wars early on, eventually dropped out of the console business and instead decided to concentrate on their software division. Today the PS3 has a huge lineup of PlayStation games including such console exclusives as Ratchet and Clank, Ridge Racer, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

The PS3 console is not an ordinary game machine. The PS3 is equipped with a 2x speed blue ray disc player, this makes the PS3 the only one of the three disc consoles on the market today to have one as a main component in their console system.

Sony’s console originally was a much larger unit upon its initial launch, but today’s model is a much slimmer model. The newest unit which was originally coined the “slim” before it was renamed the PS3 has a glossy black finish to its outer case. Beside the blu-ray player, the PS3 also has a few hard drive options that range from the basic 20 GBs to a massive 320 GBs. The unit also has Bluetooth capabilities, gigabit Ethernet and has 256 MB of XDR Ram.

Because of its ability to play blu-ray discs and other media sources, the PS3 is more than just a console gaming machine. It can be the focal point of a total entertainment system when it’s connected to a surround sound stereo system.

And when you add peripherals such as the Kinect interactive system, which is similar in scope to the Wii in regard to using motion control for some of their games like Tennis and Bowling the PS3 becomes a leader rather than the follower in the console game field, and there is the rumor of a PS4 in the works…something that many fans of Sony’s PS3 are already talking about.
